Fitness or not?

Confession time – Christmas has come early in the form of a Wii fit balance board and fitness games. Well, we had to make sure it worked so it had to come out of the box and get connected up. (It was very easy.)

I’ve only gone on it a couple of times and the news is not encouraging. The first time my Wii age was calculated at 2yrs older than I am, the next time it was 4 yrs older. And as for the weight measurements, that’s a secret. It has to be said that computer games are very sophisticated nowadays. You can ski, snowboard, walk a tightrope, head footballs (being careful to avoid other odds and ends that get thrown at you) as well as doing stepping and yoga exercises.

Still, food plays an important part over the holidays and I have the excuse of a cold to feed, so the stepping is to be gently, gently.

Tradition

If you are a regular of this blog you may have heard me mention Amontillado sherry. It is fast becoming a Christmas tradition to have a half glass in the afternoon, as dusk falls. HBTW was very happy to adopt the custom as we carried out various Christmas tasks to the background of Westminster Christmas Carols.

Memories have come rising to the surface: long ago days when our parents and grandparents either refused the evil liquor or smiled happily and said, “I don’t mind if I do.” Somehow, sherry is an old fashioned drink. It gives me an old fashioned flush as well.

So what we are doing is much more than creating a tradition, we are also thinking back to our ancestors. In my case, some of them were old soldiers of the First World War, or coal miners through the generations since around the industrial revolution about 1840. The women were nurses, weavers, homemakers and hard working mothers. The connection between us all seems more intense at this time of year. My favourite Granny, to my knowledge, never took alcohol as a social beverage, though she did have an old fashioned looking quarter bottle of brandy in the “press.” And I have seen a teaspoon being administered for medicinal purposes.

Have you any favourite Christmas or holiday traditions?

Bustle and biz

It has been a busy few days – last minute shopping and chores to do; they were made all the more Christmassy by the couple of inches of snow that we have now. Most secret of all was a visit to the pet supermarket for gifts for you-know-who. There are two grand present openings, one here at home and one at #1 Son’s home. So that means extra treats.

Present opening for Misty has become more anticipated with each Christmas; this is her fifth. Indeed when she saw the tree and decorations appear, she joined in the excitement with great glee. I am almost certain she remembers the excitement of a parcel to tear open. Did I tell you that last year at Son #1’s party she was espied creeping away down the hall with a cairn-sized parcel in her mouth? That is why there are extra gifts this year- so that we can take a couple with us to be opened on Boxing Day.

The pet shop was full of Christmas joy for animals; admittedly some of it was decidedly tacky, but as HBTW said, tackiness is allowed at Christmas. (That is his yearly mantra as we discuss houses with coloured lights festooned outside.) Purchases included: a giant stuffed teddy with pink nose; a doggy-choc Santa; a small furry lamb that squeaks; a festive chewy shoe; and a Santa hat.

Sadly, the goat, the dog and the shepherd boy (Fontanini) are still in transit somewhere. Most disappointing. They’ll have to come soon or they’ll miss the festive fun.

Misty is spending a lot of time looking out of the window, I’m not quite sure if she is watching out for deer, or waiting for Santa.

Either way, she won’t be disappointed.

It’s Complicated

It’s been a long time since I have laughed – guffawed even – out loud, literally holding my sides and unable to get my breath. This film was excellent; the cast are ideal in their roles as late middle-agers going astray.

There is one moment with Alec Baldwin which has to be a classic. (I won’t spoil it by divulging further details, but you will know it when you see it.) Meryl Streep and Baldwin play a divorced couple who somehow click in a magical affair, while Steve Martin is the gentle, genuine guy who comes into the equation.

It is romantic comedy at its best, though I admit that maybe being of a certain age makes it even funnier because of life and experience. All the characters are well played and as the amazon review says, the son-in-law had some moments of pure genius.

So there you are, a 10 out of 10 and one to add to the library.

Promised photos

A selection to prove the festive season has started.

In other years I removed the picture before taking photographs but this year the whole crib scene has grown in leaps and bounds so it almost seems a part of the scene. Recent additions have been the three cats, the elephant, Miriam the serving girl and Sharon the shepherd woman.

Decorating the tree year by year always brings back lots of memories, which is why I like having the eclectic, random, even haphazard beauty of it. It makes me think of the children growing up, visitors, Oldies who are long gone, and loads of fun and laughter. There is a kind of echo of all these memories and the emotions that go with them.

Some of the traditional baubles range over many years from 1965 until a couple of years ago. I love having the newest together with the faded old ones. Seeing them on the tree makes me think of endurance and joy and some sadness, but most of all it is the continuity of the festival every year that helps to replenish hope, love and faith.

Elephants seem to be a theme. In actual fact I put a lot of elephants up for adoption when we down-sized a few years ago. They have all settled nicely into their new homes thank you. The ones that remain at Dalamory gaze out at the preparations with calm assurance from their places on top of bookshelves.

Christmas is a time of year that evokes many memories and dreams. As grandparents, we are privileged to share some of those with our grandchildren. Now that I am retired it is an important part of the season for me. Yes, I miss the ability to lead worship, but it is wonderful to sit in a warm, decorated church and watch and listen all over again, to the Christmas stories.

How many of the cats can you see in this detail? By the way, I have to say thanks to Fontanini for all the pleasure they have given me over the years.

PS Misty has just come in from outside mingin with deer poo. A trawl round the garden reveals the place where the deer was sleeping but all the poo seems to be on Misty. (Mingin is an old Scots word for deeply unpleasant smelling.)

It’s going to happen

Yes – it’s official, Christmas is starting to happen. However there is a problem. This year’s additions to the Fontanini crib set consist of an elephant from a source in America, plus a goat, a dog and a shepherd boy from my usual source in the south of England. The elephant arrived in plenty of time but there has been a delay on the others. A crisis if you will, with the goat and dog especially upset at being stranded somewhere between the south and north of the UK. Apparently, big online stores are suspending orders because the bad weather has backed up deliveries and there are problems getting everything cleared in time for the holidays.

The celebrations started when HBTW appeared, puffing and panting a bit, weighed down with boxes and tree from the garage loft. Before I could so much as whisk a duster, installations commenced. A half glass of Amontillado each (and a dipped finger-full for Misty) and we were well on the way – to putting up the decorations, not to dissipation and inebriation.

Photos later, if you’re good.

Healing in unexpected places

Yesterday I found myself trawling blogs and youtube, in fact anywhere, trying to find something to cheer myself up. You could say it has been a difficult few days and I suspect lots of people are feeling a bit iffy this Christmas. There has been so much gloom and doom, what with budget cuts, bad weather and here in the UK student demonstrations straining into violence. Well, thanks to Writerquake I found this video. I don’t usually do two videos in a row, but for this one I had to make an exception.

If you are a bit down I hope it makes you feel better too. (That’s if you’ve got time to listen to it.)

Double Bill

Just to be clear, I don’t do horror movies. I get too scared and end up hiding behind a paper, a chair, the dog or anything handy. At least I do usually. I take everything too literally with cinema and have never been very good at telling myself it is just a story and not real.

However, over the last couple of days and to combat the extreme cold and sheer exhaustion that

comes from coping with it, HBTW and I declared a pre-Christmas holiday. There was a double bill on Sky movies about teenagers and vampires. (Twilight and New Moon) HBTW managed to convince me that these were not real horror films – that they were intended for teens; so I was persuaded to have a go.

OK they were quite dark with moody film effects but the story gripped me so much that I voluntarily suggested it would be fun to watch the second instalment of the trilogy. Very good it was too. Believable and entertaining – not funny in any way, but with enough of a tale of romance to keep me entertained.  Mind you, I was furiously busy with doing some basic crochet at the same time. The crocheting got faster and faster as the plot thickened, so that stopped the blood pressure from rising too much.

I have now seen an extended trailer and interviews with the stars outlining the next episode – Twilight Saga, Eclipse. And maybe I will be brave enough to watch that too. So if you are a bit of a coward like me, you might just enjoy this introduction to the genre. There are good vampires and bad ones, good werewolves and bad ones…… and a compelling love story. The young stars bring energy and a growing maturity to the themes, so I suspect the third film will be a bit blacker.

Anyone else seen them?
