Weatherlink

B2013 DavisweatherHBTW has a state of the art weather station………  (it is what comes from being a yachtie at heart.)  And this afternoon’s activity of the day has been to try and install the software. Not so easy – but thanks to a prompt email reply from the supportdesk staff we were able to get the link established between the bits and the gubbins, as it were. Now Himself can play away to his heart’s content. An ideal 70th birthday present, or so I thought, till I realised it was to be mounted on the roof of the house.

I’ve been enjoying catching up with some more blogs and am trying to learn the vagaries of the Feedly rss feed. I am assured by those who know about these things that it is perfectly simply. Hmmm……..  perhaps I have had enough detailed software -crawling for one day.

The weather has been pretty bleak and to be honest I still feel rather exhausted. It’s just as well that tomorrow is my designated Day Off.

Dancing Therapy

B2013 Dancing 20013 08 R&F AwardDance Class last night reminded me of this photograph taken on the day we made it back after an absence of the 5 months needed for my ankle to heal. We were given Glad to be back Awards. I managed to do away with the lacing trainers yesterday, the theory being that a bit of a twinge is good for strengthening the ligaments. However, it is going to be a while till I can try out my sparkly shoes. One of the side affects of our class is that we laugh a lot. In fact, yesterday some of us were on the way to the naughty step. It is amazing how hard it is to get new steps into your head. Think Play School rather than Strictly.

Today’s main activity was Online Evening Prayer, organised by St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow. It is amazing how soothing it is to meet with a group of people in cyberspace. It was streamed live on youtube so anyone could watch.

Interestingly, there are lots of things I could share with you, but I am conscious of the need to avoid nattering on needlessly. Aha! you say, but that is what a blog is about……….  a natter between individuals in the online world.  Never mind, I can save things for another day, after all I have the three-week-challenge to see through. For now, I am off to trawl the web to see what other online blogger-friends are up to.

3 weeks trial

If you have read any of the comments recently you may have noticed a stirring in the depths. A blogger friend suggested that the best way to restart blogging is to make an entry – however small, however trite – every day for 3 weeks. So I guess this is the first.

On a Point of Information, I had my regular check-up at the doctor today. I went along with my little list and HBTW in tow. The doctor’s face was a picture when she was taking my blood pressure. Now I know there is such a thing as white coat syndrome, but even my own chart had been indicating time for a tweak of medicines. And the extreme tiredness of late is not so good. So –  time for another battery of tests and being careful for a couple of weeks. Dancing tonight will do me good. Give it up for the rumba.

Autumn approaches

2013 SummergrassesI have been kind of losing my way in blogland over this summer. I am not sure exactly why……  Perhaps it is because I have been stopping, standing and watching things like the summer grasses and the summer skies. Perhaps the time taking to heal my ankle has made me lazy and introspective…….  Perhaps the loss of my googlereader link has cut me off from the world of bloggers.  I installed feedly, but frankly I cannot find my away around it properly. And I am missing my old routines.

There is another problem with sharing my thoughts and feelings on my blog. Much of the way I have been reacting to news and life in general has been negative. In other words I have been getting extremely cross and down-hearted. I cannot believe what has been happening in many people’s attitudes towards the poor and vulnerable in our society. And that is 0ften extended towards asylum-seekers and the disabled. Thus, there has been less good news, less humour and too much a sense of helplessness within me.

Today, as I sit here and write I question why we blog. Yes, I like to simply know about people and their lives, but I also like to be cheered up and I think it is important to share what it is like to be an elderperson at this time in the 21st Century. So maybe, just maybe I am writing myself back into being a more regular blogger. After all, a blog is a legacy. However there must be some changes. It is not comfortable to be out on a limb, but unless there is a degree of honesty there is little point.  I am not sure if my tendency to avoid confrontation comes from years of being a mother or years of being a Minister. But maybe I need to think where my fears originate. And maybe, that will give a purpose to this next stage of What’s the Story.

Join in if you have any ideas or comments.  I almost want to say but remember I am vulnerable, so that, if anything, gives a clue of my lazy, hazy, summer during the time when I am approaching 70. How can that be? – – – 70? Inside I am still the child, the teenager, the young woman, the rushing-around-always-busy woman and now I suppose I must be the getting-old woman.

Untouchable

2013 dvduntouchableEvery once in a while a film comes around that leaves you with a smile. Untouchable, is one such film.  It takes a bit more effort to concentrate on the English sub-titles, nonetheless very little is lost of the dark humour and downright irreverance. What makes it all the more compelling is that it is based on a true story.

Billionaire quadriplegic, Philippe is looking for a replacement carer,  Driss from the slums of Paris is merely attending the interview to get the box ticked on his social security form. However, Philippe takes a fancy to Driss because of his lack of pity. The Carer “forgets” his employer is paralysed at times and in due course a remarkable relationship is formed.

I don’t want to spoil the film for you by disclosing any more, let’s just say I give it a nine out of ten. The only reason it didn’t get a ten is because it leaves the viewer wanting further answers; but you can’t expect the French to wrap it up in too neat a package.

Has anyone seen it?

Magical Mystery Tour

Ok I admit it – we have been off on a magical mystery tour again. This time to visit Son #2 and baby Matthew.

2013 MistydriverAnd guess who thought she would be able to drive the campervan?

2013 MatthewearsHere is Matthew and his mum, both looking so relaxed.

2013 TonymatthewAnd #2 Son who unbelievably is a grandpa.

After the visiting, there was time to chill out at a favourite campsite.

2013 VanencampDid I tell you before how much I enjoy being away in the campervan?  We came home in time to watch the Wimbledon Final – incredibly tense but equally moving and exciting. There was a sense of being part of history.  Seeing some of the man behind the racquet documentary, helped me to see Andy Murray in a new way.

We are enjoying the best weather for several years, and making the most of being able to sit out in the garden doing nothing in particularly. Hope you are enjoying your summer.

News and rss terror

The big news today is that we are Great Grandparents to baby Matthew, who was born this morning weighing in at 8lbs 11.5 ounces. Can I really be mother to a son who is now a grandfather? It seems rather far-fetched. Anyway, we are all delighted and looking forward to seeing the new addition soon. Photos, may or may not appear. And yes, mother and baby are both doing well.

Misty had a bath today in readiness for going to see the new sproggit. The Little Dog loves a hotter than warm bath/shower and it is amazing how she fluffs up. I had forgotten that kneeling is not at present an option for me, due to my dodgy ankle, but managed to bend down enough to join in.

Taxing my brain this afternoon has been the demise of googlereader. I have been tending towards burying my head in the sand about the cut off date on 1 July. Searching the net today has not made me any the wiser as to how to cope, so I have settled for updating my blogs to read on my own blog. Of course, that doesn’t mean that I am alerted to new posts, so I have to find a way to deal with that issue. Any ideas?

House Guest

Web ViviValentine or ViVi for short, is here to stay for a few days. He is behaving impeccably and acknowledges that Misty is Top Dog………  though only just.  He is a Llewellin Setter, a strain named after a breeder who bred a dog with particular markings and characteristics from out of the English Setter.  They have wonderful temperaments, being good with children and very affectionate. It is so funny to see the difference in size between him and our little cairn terrier.
Other news is that my ankle continues to heal well with only the odd twinges. Going back to Dance Class is looking more of a possibility. The main problem is being unbalanced and doing further damage by forgetting to take things steadily. How can one do a samba steadily anyway?
I never get tired of the view from the font garden – and Misty shows Valentine how to be a laid-back dog.
