War poem

It takes the ten year old in the family to get his poem published. Here, courtesy of Kieran is his poem on war.

World War II

W hy, oh why did this war start?
O h I hate it with all my heart.
R un for the shelter, the bombs have come.
L and mucked up, I hate it now.
D ad on a ship, I don`t know which.
W ell some good news at last, Dad comes home.
A n oven sets alight ‘put it out!’ I say.
R eally got to dash for a phone.
T ime and time again the siren sounds.
W e’ll dash to safety 24/7
O h when will this war end?

Sound from the past

Unexpected visitors arrived at the weekend in a 1970 Morris Traveller. What a wonderful engine noise! And what an excellent diversion. After a quick trip round the village, I can vouch for the great Morris voice in all the gears.

Remembrance

Every year, Remembrance Sunday comes sooner than I expect. Autumn is over and summer is long gone. Thousands of people throughout the country will gather at memorials: in villages, towns and cities. All to remember those who have given their lives in wars and conflicts since World War I. Every year, whilst I was a minister, I stood outside in all sorts of weather, saying the same familiar words, reading scripture and saying prayers……being a focus for those who still remember in a community.

This year, I was impressed to read of children at school being helped to think of the cost of war and of what it meant to their ancestors. I am one of the older generation now, but I am also one of the grateful ones. My first memory of my father was of a rough serge uniform and a strange face looking in a mirror, as he held me up in front of the hall stand. There are only a few left who remember the First War, and those of us born during the Second are reaching towards the end of our lives. And I keep asking myself, when will we learn a better way?

Peace ……  that is the hope for today.

Knitting and a gale

Went out for lunch yesterday to celebrate the birthday. Then battled through wind and driving rain to get some wool and a pattern. No – the last six rows of the doggy jacket are still to do; but I have had a request for some mittens. They must be in fashion this year.

Temperature has fallen from 12.5C to 4C – What a country!

Grandmothers

Grandmas hold our tiny hands for just a little while, but our
hearts forever.
~Author Unknown

A very true statement I received in the mail a day or two ago. I still remember my grandmothers with great fondness. Yes – even the one who dyed her hair jet black and told me to call her Auntie. The other one was a traditional grandma-shape: round and squishy. She had an infectious laugh and made it clear that I was the centre of her world.

I have seven grandchildren, and all I can do is to hope that I make a difference in their lives. They won’t know how often I think of them or see their faces in my mind’s eye, but I will try to make sure they know how much they are loved.

Aamer Anwar

Something makes me uneasy about the case where Anwar made such stark comments to the media. Cannot quite put my finger on it, but I wonder about the whole concept of freedom of speech and the fear we all have of terrorism and associated activities. We are told that this could be the start of a hundred years of living with terrorism and that can only be depressing news for all of us. After all, who can expect to live longer than that to see some kind of sensible resolution.

The only thing possible in this week leading up to Remembrance Day is to remember the lessons of the past and to hope and pray for peace in the future. To hope even in the face of intransigence and hostility. That way, commonsense wins.

The devil you don’t know

Watched a DVD over the weekend – The Devil wears Prada. To be honest I did not expect it to be much more than a diversion, but in actual fact there was much to think about in it. Of course the clothes – sorry couture – accessories and style were top notch. As were the performances by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. The film gets a highly recommended from me, mainly because of what it implies about the important things in life. In other words, it made me think and left a few challenges along the way how I use my time and talents.

And yes, we do all have talents.
Happy 5th November.
