Alzheimer’s Progress

If you were to do a poll of a roomful of retirees, one of their main concerns would be about the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease being a factor in their own ageing. It is therefore good to hear of the possibility of a new drug which appears to slow down the progress of the disease dramatically. Further trials are needed, but the hope is that the treatment will be available around 2012.

I think of all the people I have met with Alzheimer’s throughout the years. Like many others I have an ancestor who suffered with the illness. Let’s hope that all goes well with the trials.

Heat

We have Mediterranean heat here in Argyll – 28.7degrees centigrade – no complaints here then. The loungers and deck chairs are outside, as is the holiday reading and I have come indoors to cool down slightly.

Status quo

There is a Bible story where Peter’s mother in law is ill with a fever. Jesus heals her, and she gets up and waits table for the apostles. The sore throat I have been suffering from for the last few days is at the “Thank goodness I am going to get better” stage. But I am quite happy not to wait tables. Healing is an emotive subject in the church; I tend towards the view that wholeness is the true gift, that means an acceptance and embracing of life and an enhancement of spirituality and the sense of being loved by God. I have little time for so called Healers who insist that someone is not healed of a serious disease because of sin in their lives. Yet I feel it is right to continue to pray for those who are sick.

So perhaps my thought for today is to remember my friends and loved ones who need support in times of illness and difficulty. That is a manageable thought and a manageable prayer. And saves the overwhelming sorrow that comes from becoming swamped and bogged down by all that is wrong in the world.

Bog cotton

This is a reminder for me of living in the Western Isles. Our house was on the edge of the moors, which stretched down to the sea, and at this time of the year the bog cotton bloomed for weeks. The white heads bobbed and danced in the breeze and they seemed to come alive with the sunlight. OK I know it is nostalgia really. Nostalgia as opposed to memory, for in the former the negative is edited out. There were bad days too; days of horizontal rain and scudding dark clouds. The good thing in Lewis was that the weather whizzed past at a fast rate of knots and was ever-changing.

Sharing

This post is about sharing – and not of the nice kind. Last week I sat behind someone who was coughing, spluttering and sneezing. Now I have a sore throat. Ah well…. such is life.

Lost and replaced

In one of my recent travels I mislaid my magnifying mirror. Useful for putting on eye make-up at 5 times magnification. Incidentally, eye-make and up and moisturiser are my only concessions to getting “done up” these days. Anyway, I hunted on ebay for a replacement and found a handy mirror in a travel pouch that was specifically designated for eyes. It arrived this morning. Oh no! It magnifies 10 times – what a sight.

Think I shall soon be a no make-up person.

Quote of the week

Picture a Highland glen – tranquil, river burbling by, mountains all around, blue sky, sheep baaing, highland cattle grazing……. youngest granddaughter pipes up – “Is there a juice shop up here?”

Classic memory.

Gifts

The two littlest grandchildren are here for a few days visit. It is wonderful to be reminded of the gift of looking at the world with new eyes every day.

Thank you Lord for this new day.
