Yes – today was the first hearing of the cuckoo this year. Spent most of the day out in the garden. No, not weeding, nor indeed work of any kind……just sheer enjoyment. Ah to be retired!

Snap! I heard my first above Loch Long this afternoon – and a woodpecker in the woods above Glenfinart Bay. And yes, retirement is the biz!

Lovely tree! We don’t have cuckoos here; I feel deprived. A fine red-headed woodpecker has been in one of our trees. The rufus hummingbird is back at our feeder after disappearing since the terrible icy front we had in April. There had been two and I hope to see the other (and more) return.
I would love to see a hummingbird. I suspect it is one of those “Aha!” moments, just the way it felt to see bee-eaters in France on year.
