Dearth of the white stuff

We have escaped the snow that is all over England and the Borders……. so far at least.

A Recommended Read

It is not often that a book feels life-changing, but I can give that kind of recommendation to A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It has certainly made me think about all sorts of issues and attitudes. Cannot say too much in case you decide to read it yourself. Well worth it and eminently readable. I couldn’t put it down.

Recovery

Today has been a day for crashing out and recovering. However, my temper has not been helped by the reports of the SNP’s  failure to get their budget through the Scottish Parliament. The main reason for my discontent is that I would have expected better of Scottish politicans at such a difficult financial time. Surely they could have compromised and come to some kind of agreement. Talk of a possible election is ridiculous – what a waste of money.

What fun today?

Yes – the offending tooth has gone. It was too far gone for root canal treatment. Yesterday ended up in a haze of painkillers, alcohol and hot water bottles. Harrumph……

Today’s outings include a trip to the doctor’s to get blood tests and a trip to the big town for a haircut. And foils. I shall leave the foils to your imagination. It is to be hoped I do not have to resort to alcohol for losing my hair.

Going out

Going to the dentist today – the first time I will have been out of the house for three weeks. I am hoping to be able to keep from coughing long enough for some remedial work to be done on the broken tooth. Funny how being unwell makes you prioritise things strictly. But it does make me think about all the hundreds of thousands of people who live life as “shut-ins” they never get out of the house at all. So I shall be thinking of them as I enjoy my car ride to the big town.

Longer days

The days are getting longer. It feels very strange, especially as I seem to have missed January this year.

Gladys Aylward

Watched some daytime TV today – Inn of the Sixth Happiness. I last remember watching it when I was about thirteen. If was one of those uplifting dramas with a suitable love interest. Shame it turns out that in real life the missionary – Gladys Aylward – was not only accused of being a Chinese spy and bringing other missionaries into danger including torture, she was never romantically involved with her friend, who was a Catholic priest. She was deeply hurt by the liberties taken in twisting the truth to make it more cinema-worthy.

It is good to know the truth thanks to the net, but it does show how one can be wrongly informed by Hollywood.

Clothes

Up and dressed for the first time in nearly a fortnight. The Open University Assignment is ready – and only needs a final edit tomorrow. Only just in time as the course ends on Friday.

Next big step will be to stick my nose out of the door. Still coughing, but not nearly as bad as it was.

Still abed

Still laid low by the flu but feeling able to indulge in a little light computing. To add insult to injury, a tooth broke over the weekend. Thus, I am praying I do not swallow any more of it whilst coughing. No chance of getting out to the dentist at the moment. I am going to try to do a little writing for my final assignment but fear it might be a trifle jaded.
