The latest in the nematode saga

The packet of nematodes has arrived. It has been double-locked in the fridge till Him Behind the Wheel is brave enough to let them loose on the garden. Apparently the technique is to mix them with water and water them onto the affected area of garden. The microscopic organism then burrow down to find their prey and infect them with bacteria, thus clearing the area.

Perhaps then the plants will survive.

Another rest day

Had a busy day yesterday doing all sorts of things in Oban. The weather was still Mediterranean so Oban itself was hopping. Could have done without the piper up the pier and the Scottish Country Dance music blaring forth from one of the cafes. All and sundry were out and about dressed in their summer garb. Best bargain of the day was a 99p portable fan, best cake of the day was an orange polenta. However, today is designated a rest day.

Fact of the week: Misty has been swimming. Yes – really swimming.

Elder Wisdom

This is one of those gems that May Sarton comes up with.

…… I have come to see that the past is always changing, is never static, never “placed” forever like a book on a shelf. As we grow and change, we understand things and the people who have influence us in new ways.

Confession time

The confession is that I felt very much like throwing water over Him Behind the Wheel a couple of days ago. This is an urge that always seems to come over me when the weather turns Mediterranean.

Must mean there is hope for me yet.
PS – I resisted the impulse. Couldn’t face the consequences!

Lazy Days

When the sun keeps shining you just keep on having to have another lazy day.

Good weather is too rare to waste.

Encampment

Yesterday reminded me so much of holidays in Luskentyre during the long summer days on the Island of Harris. Those were the days of terry towelling nappies and small children. Washing clothes out in a bucket of cold water under the running tap. The “caravan site” had three static caravans and two small toilets plus the tap in the middle of the field. We looked out on the sand dunes and the Atlantic and the days always seemed long and satisfying. The children and their friends ran down the hillside pulling their younger siblings in cardboard boxes; so much for health and safety. Can’t say the days were always sunny, but it is on sunny days that such memories come to the fore.

Misty, Him Behind the Wheel and myself had our own encampment of loungers, sun parasoles, and accoutrements of coffee table and assorted drinks out in the front garden. Sheer bliss. (I refuse to think about the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday!) Am resolved to enjoy the summer while it lasts.

Happy Pentecost!

Only in Argyll

Yes – Argyll is one of the few places where the temperature goes from 10.5 to 22.5 overnight. Never mind, the sunshine is supposed to last for a few days. Lots more barbecues I guess. The cat and dog like them too!

The deer the deer

There is a little dog called Misty who patrols the garden regularly protecting the plants from the ravages of the deer. So why is one of the baby apple trees being eaten? Yes – it is the deer. But poor little dog cannot be out all night. She gets sleepy.

Nematodes

I have been investigating the world of nematodes for the control of slugs. As far as I can ascertain, they are tiny organisms that attack slugs underground and “do them in.”  So far so good – but they have to be ordered at specific times and only live for four weeks so treatment should have started in the autumn.

Anybody out there any wiser than me?
