Nice surprise

Had a busy day yesterday: Oban in the morning – including a superb lunch at Eusk, an “Italian” overlooking the bay. Him Behind the Wheel has coeliac disease and is limited to a strictly gluten free diet. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that the restaurant had gluten free pasta and pizza available. Definitely a first and deserving a ten out of ten.

In the evening we went with new neighbours to a local Quiz Night in the church hall. Lovely evening with much laughter, especially when I inevitably had difficulty with a biblical question.

Misty was in charge of the house for much longer than usual and did a very good job. Needless to say today is a rest day.

I love the way the daisies colonise every available space.

Gazebo

This is the initial putting up of the £11.99 gazebo. Misty thinks it is for her. The good news is that it works.

Day Out

Misty is happy that we are going on an expedition: a day out in the campervan to Tarbert. To visit the optician.

Perhaps we will see the dolphins.

Wimbledon again

Best combination of weather yesterday: damp and wet here and sunny at Wimbledon. The grunting debate is a non-starter as far as I am concerned. I have never liked it, and sexist or not the women are definitely worse than the men.  Many women players shriek and scream noisily. I stuck to watching the Mens’ singles.

It is a long time since I have played tennis but I still remember the fun of playing on grass courts. The whole ambiance forms part of the memory: the smell of newly mown grass; the squeaking of tennis shoes as one slips and slides on the court; the dull thwack of the bounce and the beautiful colour. I have to try not to support any particular player as I get too involved mentally. It takes me right back to club competitions and school matches. Not good for the blood pressure. So it goes without saying that I cannot cope with watching Andy Murray.

Summer solstice

I rather like the idea that the summer solstice heralds the start of summer proper. It gets away from the feeling that we have reached the shortest night and that it is all downhill till Christmas.

The summer is hidden behind the mist here today. Drat.

Changed times

In the many years when I worked in offices I coped with all sorts of changes in methods and tools. My first ever semi-mechanical calculator was a kind of complicated abacus which worked on a 3D type of mechanism. It was amazing how fast you could get at doing complex sums. There was a noise of whirring and clunking as the quotations for life assurance premiums were churned out and checked. Later on, in another office it was adding machines for the majority operating to the background noise of one of the first ever electronic book-keeping machines. This was used by the elite only. After that I grew acquainted with typewriters, firstly manual then electric, then almost mini-word processors. In time I became one of the higher echelons who used dictating machines for others to type.

A career break followed (four children reason enough?) and by the time I returned it was to the start of the computer age. And of course programmes became more and more complex and versatile; with the advent of email, the internet  and now social networking sites my skills continued to improve. Adaptability, that is the key, thought I – quite proud of myself in actual fact. In the ministry I got used to doing my own mail and roughing up templates and doing my own printing – Compliments slips, memos, headed letters…….. no problem.

So why is it that after four years of being retired it suddenly became a big job to turn out templates in Word for the self-same compliments slips and memos? Oh yes – I have to admit it, I had lost the originals. What should have been a half hour job took most of yesterday morning. A new edition of Microsoft Word didn’t help – all the buttons had disappeared. And the online wizard sections of Microsoft were beyond me. Eventually, the text and fonts were all worked out. Then I got everything in the wrong position on the A4 paper. But ignominy of all …… I had to get Him Behind the Wheel to guillotine the final copies.

Ah well…. at least there is a nice new supply of stationery for those times when an email just won’t do. And as for tweets – don’t even go there.

Feeling good

Feeling virtuous at any rate – the weather has alternately been bright sunshine or chucking it down rain. Managed to walk the dog in a dry spell. You’ve got to look on the bright side.

There is a wonderful cartoon in the Times today. The supreme leader (of Iran) is standing on a chair holding his robes up and going “Eek!”  There is a computer mouse on the floor in front of him. That says it all. Blogging and twittering are indeed changing the world.
