Wisdom

Muriel Rukeyser wrote that “the universe is made of stories not atoms.”

I have been reading about wisdom being a gift passed on by elders through telling stories. I never really understood that until I started to get older. At uni they used to tell us about the importance of stories and I guess at the time I thought it was all a bit folksy.

Now I know better.

Falling apart

Took Misty for a walk this morning and stopped to say hello to an neighbour who used to have a cairn. Tripped up the kerb and landed sprawling on the grass beside the pavement, narrowly missing a post with my head. The neighbour got a dreadful fright and I was a bit shaken myself. Misty couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Anyway, no bones were broken, which was a miracle.

I guess it is harder being without my varilux spectacles than I thought. They are away at the optician’s getting new lenses.

Fresh strawberries

Ther is nothing like strawberries straight from the garden. Fortunately Misty hasn’t cottoned onto them ripening on the plants, otherwise she would be in competition with the birds.

A prayer for peace

God of the nations,
whose kingdom rules over all:
have mercy on our broken and divided world.
Shed abroad your peace in the hearts of all people,
and banish from them the spirit that makes for war;
that all races and peoples may learn to live
as members of one family,
and in obedience to your love.

Wimbledon

It was tortuous watching Andy Murray versus Andy Roddick in the semi-finals at Wimbledon yesterday.

Only good thing – now that there is no Brit in the finals I can really enjoy it for the tennis.

Nematodes update

By popular request – here is the latest on the nematodes experiment.

It has been a success. The delphinium plant which had all the shoots eaten away by slugs has now recovered and is sending out new growth prodigously. It even has flowers, which are white rather than the blue I had expected – but no matter; flowers are flowers after all.

The slugs have died off underground so we don’t even have to bother with mass burials.

Refunds

By the way – I got my refund back from the dodgy, clunky cash machine. Plus an apology from my bank. Mind you, I suppose it is a bit much to demand that a bank knows whether the machine counts out the right cash for every transaction at the time. Thus there is no alternative but to wait for the balancing procedures and inter-bank claim forms. Still a lesson in taking care where bank statements and ATMs are concerned.

The Borders

Visiting the Borders today. Long rolling hills instead of high, peaky mountains.

Misty loves the adventure.
