Countdown

The Christmas cards have to be done soon. Cards have started to arrive in the post each day. I enjoy seeing those few words from friends I often don’t hear of very much throughout the year. That’s the thing with getting older – you tend to collect people. I am also thinking of when to put out the nativity set. This year there is also the problem of where to put the tree – an extra bookcase is to blame for this.

And so, the countdown begins. The secret is to take things steadily. I know it is much harder for people with busy jobs; they will get added to the prayer list!

More cause for jealousies

Having a cat and a small dog causes all sorts of unexpected fun. However, jealousy has been rearing its ugly head. Fox, the cat, has long been vaguely cross that Misty, the cairn, has to have eye drops every morning. (She has no tears in one eye.)  But now the cat has conjunctivitis and needs drops twice a day. Still, the cat should only need them for a week. Misty wins the attention stakes because she needs her treatment every day for the rest of her life.

Pet shop

Went into the pet supermarket in Oban yesterday to buy small milk dishes for the cat and a Christmas present for the dog. (Don’t worry, I have already got something for the cat!)  I got diverted by the small animals at the rear of the shop. There was one large, clean, glassed area in a warm corner and it contained about half a dozen guinea pigs. I have never seen such happy animals, they were playing in and out of tubes, going for drinks and munching on treats. Full marks to the pet shop.

And No – I am not even tempted to have a guinea pig.

Advent crosses

That title doesn’t seem to fit or go together. I have just been thinking of crosses because the Craig Lodge community have erected the cross on the hill opposite the house. Come to think of it, people don’t like the idea of an instrument of torture and the lovely picture we have of Jesus in the manger with the animals standing by.

Advent is the time of year when the churches look forward to the birth of Christ, the renewal of Christ in our hearts and the Coming or Arrival of Christ at the end of all time. A far cry from when I was a small child and enjoyed crossing off the days of December on an ordinary, rather austere post-war calendar. I am amazed at the plethora of advent calendars and toys. There are calendars with pictures behind opening doors for each day (common when my own children were young); calendars with chocolates behind each door, (they only last till around 3rd December – the chocs often get robbed); and wooden advent toys with drawers for each day and treats or models inside. There are secular “counting down the days” calendars, and Christian ones with nativity figures.

But I can still remember the thrill of anticipation each bedtime, when I crossed the day off the ordinary calendar and went to bed dreaming of a Christmas orange. Happy days……….. or were they?

Sunday Service

Went to a combined service at Crianlarich today. It was most uplifting – and that was the sermon and communion, not just the soup and goodies afterwards. The afternoon has been spent chatting to various friends and doing more Christmas shopping online. Well – it is the season.

Fox the cat

OK – he has been insisting on a photo-shoot now that he is almost back to normal. The main differences in him are the sleeker look and the apparent craze for cuddles.

The quest for peace

By Edward Rowland Sill.

‘Tis not in seeking,
‘Tis not in endless striving
Thy quest is found.

Be still and listen.
Be still, and drink the silence
Of all around.

Not for thy crying,
Not for thy loud beseeching
Will peace draw near.

Rest, with palms folded,
Rest with thine eyelids fallen-
Lo, peace is here.

Applications and iphone

Now I understand why there was such a commotion at the launch of the iphone and the explosion of applications – some free, some minimal in cost and even some dearer ones like car navigational systems. It is like suddenly having a whole new toyshop to play in. At the moment I am content to browse – anyway, I haven’t yet worked out how to download. With my old phone it was a case of downloading things to the computer and then syncing them to the phone. It was all so complicated that I rarely bothered. Now, I suspect it is all a lot simpler, but am too wary to try. Let’s face it, it took me a couple of days to be able to face syncing my contacts and notes. However, it purports to be relatively straightforward; now I just have to decide what to download.
