Too much reality

This post is being written whilst I exit stage left because I am unable to deal with the tension in a crime show. I am famously, a coward when it comes to implied threat or violence. This brings me to a struggle I have been engaged in with myself this week. I often put details of books I have read on my blog; reading is one of my great pleasures. In the past week I have finished two books. The first was an autobiography from Karen Armstrong – The Spiral Staircase – no problems there. Simply fascinating speculation on matters of Christianity and praxis. The second was a novel – Slumdog Millionaire. I had heard reviews saying that the film was one of those feel-good movies that was well done and commendable – hence the awards it won. Unfortunately the book turned out to be very graphic about some of the horrors of life in India, not just poverty (that is bad enough,) but horrible violence and evil. So I was left with a conundrum: whether to finish the book and take my chances or to give up and try not to imagine the rest of it.

I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone who is a more robust reader than I, but I should say that the happy ending consisted of a truncated one and a half pages. I never like giving up on a book, so I read on till the bitter end. Of course, I was hoping for something silly and easy to imagine like, It could happen to you – a movie about winners of a lottery and true love etc…..  Instead, I had a harrowing experience. What I want to know now is should I watch the DVD of Slumdog?

This whole experience leads me to consider my current state of mind. Perhaps it is because I am retired and getting older, after all a birthday is due next month! Or maybe I am suffering from over-exposure to the evils of human beings in the media, over and against the lack of happy stories. But I do need to come to terms with being able to be more realistic about life. It is not all CSI-style cops and murderers!

Change of roles

Dalamory has a problem.

The cat has taken to begging for food and eating dog food. The dog is bemused and getting a little bit stroppy. So far it is 1 all.

A very merry unbirthday

Perhaps the anticipation of a month of treats is enough, rather than a pre-birthday month. It is a bit the same as that strange phenomenon of being retired and still having a Day Off. One can declare any day a holiday. But it is still good to have special treats. They needn’t involve a lot of expense. Re-reading an enjoyable novel is the ideal place to start.

Mo Mowlam

Last night I watched the docu-drama, “Mo” thanks to the wonders of Channel4OD. What a performance by all the cast, especially Julie Walters who portrayed the larger than life character of Mo Mowlam with sincerity and integrity. It is hard to credit the talent that is Walters, matching Mowlam’s own I suspect.  I read Mowlam’s book on the peace process, but knew little of her struggle with the malignant brain tumour which ultimately killed her. My guess is that few people watching the programme were far from tears at times. A definite recommendation from me.

The news in Dalamory

Today is the start of the pre-birthday month. Haven’t quite decided whether to designate this a month of pre-birthday treats or of planning what the treats will be in the actual birthday month.

Misty has now lost a total of 0.4kgs. Well done Misty.

End of January

I am having a last-day-of-January day off. It’s all to do with feeling better and trying to do too much.  And I guess tomorrow will be my proper Day Off!

Perfection

We have no Starbucks locally. So it is important to know how to make the perfect cup of mid-morning coffee.

Boil the kettle and put 200mls of semi-skimmed milk in the microwave to heat up. Find the pussy-cat mug. Put one heaped teaspoon of Kenco (sustainable development) Columbian coffee in the mug and add four sweeteners and approx 5cms height of boiling water. Whisk the hot milk thoroughly with an aerolatte wand and carefully add to the cup, top off with the froth of the milk. Sit somewhere peaceful and drink.

Bliss…….

Internet Shopping Service

There can be an amazing difference with the online shopping experience. Recently, we decided to purchase a new weather station. Him Behind the Wheel searched for the good deals and came up with what seemed like the best and duly booked the order. We waited. We waited 10days and there had been no email to confirm despatch though the credit card had been charged. Annoyed HBTW wrote a sharp email only to be told that the item would not be in stock until mid-Feb. However, the firm did offer a refund. (Incidentally, this is through today.)

We then decided to look through ebay or amazon, both much-used sites. A new shop was found, an even better deal was on offer (more extras such as rainwater gauge and anemometer, the items were declared to be in stock, thus the order was placed yesterday at 3-00pm. The said weather station arrived this morning at 08-30am. How is that for service?  The birds are already getting used to the strange gizmos on top of their feeding station.

Low profile

It is kind of salutory that one afternoon out requires two days to rest up. Never mind, the resting up is done for now and our Discussion Course (Living the Questions) starts again at church tomorrow night. No homework so far, but I am sharpening the brain cells in readiness for seven weeks of thinking through the difficult questions and issues that face Christians today.
