Special Things

Special Olympics opening ceremony was brill! Maybe more on that story later. This morning has been busy catching up with things. Eagles out the front window, the peculiar freewheel bicycling sound of the grasshopper warbler out the front, dragon-flies in the forest and one muddy dog.

Now I'm off to catch the bus to go to the dentist. It's all go.

A Prayer

From the Iona Community……..

May God's goodness be yours,
And well, and seven times well, may you spend your lives:
May you be an isle in the sea,
May you be a hill on the shore,
May you be a star in the darkness,
May you be a staff to the weak
And may the power of the Spirit
Pour on you, richly and generously,
Today and in the days to come.

Thinking especially of all those helping and taking part at the Special Olympics, Glasgow.

Special Olympics

Off today to support our son, Rab, at the Special Olympics. 2500 athletes converging on Glasgow and an extravaganza of an Opening Ceremony tonight at Celtic Park Football Ground. Rab is competing in the 10-pin Bowling. Now I want to enlist the power of prayer/positive thought/crossing of fingers. If everyone who reads this concentrates really hard……it is bound to help. Thanks. It will be a fun day anyway.

Tennis

Tennis court picture

This is to prove that I really did play tennis enthusiastically once upon a time. It is of myself (left) and my folks (both sadly now passed on.)

OK – I admit it was taken forty-five years ago!

Excuse the quality or rather lack of it, this is from an old 35mm slide scanned into my hard drive.

An honest flower

Flowers

These mesembryanthemums (or is it mesembryanthema?) are amongst my favourite flowers. They certainly wear their colour combinations superbly.

Fluffy Dog

By popular request, here is a picture of the fluffy dog, just after her travelling beauty therapist had been.

Sorry you cannot see the tail!

Industrial sniping

Couldn't resist this little bit of whimsy that popped into my Inbox this week.

At a recent computer expo, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, “If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.” In response GM issued a statement stating that if GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1.  For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.2.  Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.3.  Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.4.  Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.5.  Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive – but would only run on fiver percent of the roads.6.  The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single “This Car Has Performed and Illegal Operation” warning light.7.  The airbag system would ask “Are you sure?” before deploying.8.  Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.9.  Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as their old car.10. You'd have to press the “Start” button to turn the engine off.

More Celtic Spirituality

Following on from last week's piece of Welsh Celtic Spirituality, here is a piece about the Soul.

I am a flame of fire, blazing with passionate love;
I am a spark of light, illuminating the deepest truth;
I am a rough ocean, heaving with righteous anger;
I am a calm lake, conforting the troubled breast;
I am a wild storm, raging at human sins;
I am a gentle breeze, blowing hope in the saddened heart;
I am dry dust, choking worldly ambition;
I am wet earth, bearing rich fruits of grace.

Dog Parlour

Dana had a wonderful time earlier this week with the arrival of the mobile doggy beauty parlour. The van parked outside and Dana willingly lept inside, only to emerge two hours later suitably coiffeured, bathed and smelling gorgeous.

What I wanted to know was how the groomer had managed to lift a 30 kilo retriever into the bath! Most impressive.

Comment on dress

A friend wrote to me with his comments on Moderatorial Dress

I thought he must have had a bad cold as he had a bib down his left lapel and handkerchieves stuck up his jacket sleeves. I did wonder whether he had come from auditioning for pantomime to play Buttons!

Classic!
