Is it or isn’t it a wood wasp?

All I remember is a terrifying insect perched in front of me at eye level. It thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the snack of squashed bugs. Can anyone out there help in identification. The picture doesn’t actually show the yellow and black stripes. It was taken by Him Behind the Wheel just as we were being waved through a roadworks stop. (See his post of 15 July)

Swooping learners

One of the magical moments on our trip to Son No 2 – was a Bill Oddie special. We were standing in the barn looking at four or five baby swallows peeking out of their nest. All of a sudden they decided it was an ideal time for a practice swoop or two right over our heads. Breathtaking.

Sorry, I did not have the camera there at the right time.

Safely home

Back at home after spending an overnight at Grantown on Spey. Time to collapse, then unpack and do the washing.

Modern technology

Thanks to the miracles of modern technology – (ie Wifi) – I can post to my website whilst away from home. We are with Son No 2 near New Pitsligo and Pennan. Lots to see here on the smallholding though – including one small cairn amidst eight horses’ hooves. That is two horses and eight hooves, just for the record. Whence commeth such bravery? You may well ask; the secret is in feeding time and a cairn passion for anything edible, like horse feed.

National Kissing Day

No – I am not advocating yet another special day. July 6th was National Kissing Day in the States, though it seems that not many people took much notice. Here’s a quiz on kissing, if you feel like testing your prowess.

I scored abysmally, by the way.

There’s gold in these ther’ hills

Have just discovered that there is a dormant gold mine on the lower slopes of Ben Lui, not far from Tyndrum. Apparently, people still pan for gold in the River Cononish. The price of gold worldwide is currently too low to make the operation of the mine economic. It is said that one man managed to find enough gold in the river to have a wedding ring made for his wife.

Next time I go for a walk up there I must take the kitchen sieve.
