The church in the countryside

Sounds like the title of a book – indeed I think it is. Yesterday, after the church service I looked round at a goodly number of people who had stayed for tea and coffee, and enjoyed the buzz of friendliness. A new person was being welcomed into the village, a five year old boy was running around helping serve biscuits, and I couldn’t help thinking that this is what the church in the countryside is all about.

Horizontal rain

The weather yesterday brought to mind the horizontal rain of the Western Isles. I never did get used to being blown sideways and battered with hail at the same time. The river has burst its banks and the ground is either under water or turned into mush. A visit to Inveraray was meant to be to walk the dog in the shelter of the trees. There was very little shelter. There was very little pier either – the sea was within inches of the top of it. I heard one person in the shop comment that the policeman was very worried as it was still twenty minutes to high tide, and he was keeping an eye on it. I left, wondering what he was thinking of doing!  I guess we are lucky not to be in the floodplains of the north of England. Quite frightening, these extremes of weather.

Another rest day

Up and about and into town yesterday for several appointments. Diet club last night (no change, which in the circumstances is good news. I have been prone for most of the week.) Consequently, today is a rest day. Time to enjoy more reading and encourage Him Behind the Wheel from the sidelines. He is decorating the shower room.

Moans and groans

When you get to the stage of moaning and groaning about a cold, you know it is on the mend!

Extreme Religion

It has been a quiet weekend; a kind of recovery time from overdoing things. This has given me the opportunity for more reading and reflection time, (in between the obligatory doze with the dog on my knee.) I was greatly impressed by the last of the BBC programmes involving Peter Olwen Jones in being an extreme pilgrim. He spent three weeks alone in a cave near the monastery of St Anthony in Egypt. Even the film crew left, and he made a video diary that left very little of the hardship to the imagination. What impressed me was the seriousness and the effort he made. And it was truly wonderful to see such a lightening in his face and expression as he came to the end of the adventure.

I also spent time reading a book 9o minutes in heaven by Don Piper. As you may surmise from the title, it is an autobiographical account of a life and death experience, which was quite simply life-changing and ultimately life-enhancing for him. It is not my normal form of spiritual reading, but a friend gave it to me with a view to discussing it the next time we meet. I have not yet worked out how best to tackle this – my memory being what it is – but a critique seems like a good idea.

Thus my spirituality over the last few days has been nurtured by Jesuits and their Sacred Space daily reader; extreme aestheticism; charismatic renewal and the universalist tinged writings of May Sarton. It is only as I reflect on it all that I realise how appropriate it all is for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Contentment

When you are content to be simply yourself
and don’t compare or compete,
everybody will respect you.
    Lao Tzu

And it is easier if you simply accept that you are loved by God,
just the way you are.

Slimming club

Slimming Club was a success last night. I am now officially back to my pre-Christmas weight. Makes me wonder why I succumbed to all the Christmas cake and goodies though.

I-pod generation

I quite fancy the idea of being a techie and having music downloaded onto my Stellar (PDA/phone). The trouble is I cannot quite work out the pages and pages of instructions. I am sure there must be a simpler way. So this will have to be my task over the next week or so. Who writes these instruction books anyway?
