Travelogue

My Canadian cousin keeps a travel blog here. She and her husband are travelling in their camper to take advantage of better weather further south. I know there must be some dull days, but oh how beautiful the photos are. Made me think how nice it would be to see more of the sun.

British Telecommunications again

BT have been driving me nuts again. As part of our Broadband setup at home, we have an extra telephone with a virtual number. It is only used occasionally, and mainly at offpeak times which are free for up to an hour. When it is used during the day there is a separate bill. One came in this quarter for 12 pence. I tried phoning Sanji to ask if I could have this transferred onto the direct debit account for the phone package. After checking with his supervisor he came back and said that No, unfortunately this was not possible.

So I ended up writing a cheque for the 12 pence and sending it off with a second class stamp. Is it them or me that is stupid?

A surprising parable

Someone at church the other week, told me that he had read The Shack by William P Young. He sounded so enthusiastic and said, “You must read it.” So, as I am into reading as a writer at the moment I had a go. What a surprise. It is a work of fiction but includes a whole lot of theology dressed up as discussion. I don’t want to spoil it for you if you decide to read it, but let it be said that the Charismatic Process Theology described was one I recognised and empathised with immediately.

Then, I took a tour on the internet and discovered an amazing amount of web chatter. Lots very pro, and some vehemently against. What a fuss about something that can only encourage people to think about God and faith and the hard questions about suffering and redemption. Most interesting of all is the fact that it was originally a private publication, yet in the first year sold 1.7million copies. (Or so it is claimed.) Hodder and Stoughton have now taken it on in the UK, which says it all. I don’t go with the idea that it is equivalent to Pilgrim’s Progress, but it is certainly CS Lewis at his most playful.

Sunday Service

Not well enough to go to church this morning, so I shall watch a service instead. Saw the Royal British Legion Festival Service last night. They have certainly learned how to make it relevant every year. As I have said before, I remember especially watching it year by year with my father. He helped to make it part of me – I cannot explain it any more than that.

Special prayers to all friends with relatives and loved ones serving in the forces.

Worth pondering

You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.

Writer’s Review

The Creative Writing course advocates being an avid reader. Of course this sits well with my sedentary lifestyle at present. The student is also encouraged to write a review of each book read. In particular, reviewing the books with a writer’s eye. Perhaps that should be nose. I have to say that this makes reading even more enjoyable and does have the advantage of making me remember the stories for long enough to carry out the review. A new writer I have found recently is Jodi Picoult – she has a particular formula for success (crime committed that is not all it seems, flashbacks to set out what led to the crime, court scenes bringing all to a conclusion – often with a twist.) Usually, I find court-room dramas on TV rather boring. Shades of too much Ironside in my youth. But Picoult seems to get under my skin. She makes the reader think outside of the box. As my box is the four walls of the house just now, it is a welcome relief.

Oh yes – the recent read was “Nineteen Minutes” – Hodder & Stoughton 2007.

Past and present

My mother died 16 years ago. Had she lived she would have been 84 yesterday. I used to think it was cool to have a birthday on Bonfire Night. Correction – in those days “cool” meant not feeling warm enough. But I did think it had distinction. Musing on such things through the cloud of sinex spray and vick vapour rub that still surrounds me, I am amazed at how young she was when she died. Not much older than I am now. Colds and coughs apart, I have to say that I don’t feel much like the Little Old Lady she became.

All of that must be that my cold is getting better.

Thermals

The cold weather led me to do some internet shopping. Did you know that thermals for women are called Long Janes?
