One of my Christmas presents was a copy of Untold Stories by Alan Bennett. I haven't been able to put it down. Somehow I recognise all the characters in his autobiographical memoir lasting 127 pages, at the start of the book. But then I reckon that is the genius of a real writer. He brings both humour and pathos to the most depressing of life-stories. That is all part of his compelling style.
