Creative Writing

This is probably not the best week to be thinking about Creative Writing, though my next assignment in the course is very much on my mind. I am trying to write about church blogging, but it seems to be fairly limited with regard to Christian bloggers in Scotland. However, I got happily diverted when looking up my name on Google (go on – don't tell me you haven't done it yourself!) to discover these handy tips from a writer called Freda Lightfoot who apparently publishes “family sagas” – sounds like holiday reading to me.

At one time a blogger commented that my blog had very few links, so I am determined a) to try and include some; which means more surfing on my part, and b) learning how to insert the links in a less clumsy fashion. Time will tell if this works.

Strictly

Well done Darren and Lydia for their win in Strictly Come Dancing.

Well done me for doing the career planning test at http://similarminds.com/global-adv.html  I am not going to post my results. Sufficient to say that it is just as well I am retired. It does mention that the test – all 126 questions – can be used as a means of refining the perception of self. Perhaps I ought to have a go at that and see if I can become a bit more confident and healthier in my attitude to life. on the other hand it could just be that I was in a demoralised state when I did the test, all because I was having trouble printing out service sheets for the Christmas Day Services. Yes, I know I am retired, but what minister can resist the invitation to preach on such a special day?

I'll let you know how it goes…….

A prayer

A prayer and a thought today for all the people who are working flat out this weekend and in the days up to Christmas.

May there be peace and joy in the midst of all the bizz.

Amaryllis

My amaryllis is 33ins (80cm) high and is almost in flower.
I am hoping it comes fully into bloom before it topples over.

Matters Legal and the Helen Percy Case

Yesterday, the House of Lords granted an appeal to Helen Percy whereby she is entitled to take her case – presumably for constructive dismissal on grounds of sex discrimination – to an employment tribunal. She stands to win a considerable sum in compensation. I applaud her bravery, tenacity and patience, though she will require these qualities still further in the next months. I can only imagine the furore this has created at the central offices of the Church of Scotland, and I wonder whether anyone is truly aware of the full ramifications of this judgement.

For half my working life I was a professional insurance person with the credentials and qualifications to prove it! Indeed for some years I was both a tutor for the Chartered Insurance Institute and an examiner – specifically interested in legal liability insurance, which encompasses the whole area of employment legislation. Now of course, the law never stands still, but it had been long established even in my day, that if someone was “treated as if they were an employee ie were directed in matters of work and receiving of payment” then the person in the position of an employer was legally obliged to take out Employer's Liability Insurance. In fact a certificate of insurance confirming this fact has to be displayed in any premises of work. Churches and religious institutions have for too long believed themselves to be above the law in this matter, and those working for them have often suffered as a result.

In boards and committees of the church I have on several occasions pointed out this point of principle. No-one would believe me. How sweet is vindication. I only hope it is too for Helen Percy. Well done Helen.

Presbytery Again

Went to Presbytery ……again yesterday. And that's after saying I couldn't cope with such a long day the last time. (Area business meeting of the Church of Scotland.)

It has taken me all of today to (partly) recover. So I don't think it is for me in the future. As to the content – well, I do not want to offend anyone, but even saying that gives a flavour of the way the church gets itself tied up in bureacracy.

It's the Dalamory life for me!

Google cleverness

Thanks to the cleverness of Google in adding advertisements at will….. (only if enabled of course) – I have discovered that there is a campervan conversion called the Ford-Freda. Check out http://www.algysautos.com/BONGO.html

Fame of a sort.

The tree the tree

photo of Christmas tree

At last the decision about the tree has been made – on sale at Argos…… the main thing is that it holds the memories of all the years in the shape of the various hang-up decorations.

And it is done. The cat was not amused and the dog was worried we might be about to move house again.

Sshhhh  – don't tell anyone. I know it is still only Advent.

Wrapping parcels

Wrapping parcels to post has never been my favourite job. (So why did I buy such awkwardly shaped Christmas presents?) But I have become much better at it since I became an amazon bookseller and an ebay devotee. All sorts of boxes, envelopes and wrappers are hoarded in case they come in useful. This morning has just proved the point. The only trouble is that I forgot to put the Christmas cards inside the parcels. Never mind, they can go separately. I am certainly not unsealing the sticky tape and going through the fight with the ke-doofer that puts parcel tape on things again.

Surprising words

Found in psalm 119 this week – some surprisingly comforting words.

Give me back my life because of your unfailing love.

In other words, not because I am worthy, not because I love, but because God loves.
Always.
