A billion

They say that over a billion people throughout the world watched the Concert for Diana.  I dipped in and out and have to admit to an ignorance about much of the pop music stars nowadays. But it was wonderful to see Wembley stadium full and to join in a little bit with all the young(ish) people celebrating a life. A wonderful idea to benefit many charities, and somehow it seemed for me to epitomise something of the British spirit. We need that kind of togetherness.

Fascination

It is indeed fascinating to see the new extension taking shape. Yesterday, a velux window was installed in the roof. (Of the house, not the extension.) It is not yet letting light through to the bathroom underneath, but I am sure the spiders in the loft are enjoying the sunlight. I have been amazed at the sheer amount of work in this new-build, which is to provide an extra shower-room and sun-room.

Well done Jock the joiner.

New cabinet

Is it ageism that the BBC reports with glee that there are now five ministers under forty, instead of five over sixty?

I am getting to the stage where I recognise the value in experience – especially that particular brand that can be termed elder-experience.

Gordon Brown

So Gordon Brown really is our new Prime Minister. I don’t think I ever really believed it would happen. Perhaps I am now too cynical to hope that any politician can make much difference to the wrongs we live with. There is much that is good about our country, but the overwhelming sense I have is of too many layers of management in nearly every sphere.

Goofs

Thanks to Islandwriter’s blog for bringing this to my attention. Keep watching to the end! It is well worth it and raised a few chuckles to brighten the day.

Sports action

Wimbledon starts today. Now it is not raining here. Does that mean it will be raining there?

17th Century Prayer

Give me the ability to see good things
in unexpected places
and talents in unexpected people,
And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so.

Hearing thunder

Oh dear! I spoke too soon about everything being lovely. After a beautiful morning yesterday, Misty started to get very out of sorts…….she was kind of bristley and spooked. Then the heavens opened and it poured fit to bust. And the thunder roared as the lightening flashed. Poor little dog was most put out; no matter how hard she barked the thunder would not go away. She ended up exhausted and put herself to bed early.

Can’t say the weather is not a good topic of conversation. It always surprises.

Summer

Yesterday was the summer solstice and therefore the longest day. Dalamory must have been one of the warmest places in Scotland as well: 24.5C and mainly sunny. When we moved here people gave dire warnings of the dreadful weather, but so far we have been pleasantly surprised, particularly with the summers. All is lush and green in the garden, courtesy of the recent sudden but brief showers and apart from the midgies, it could not be bettered.
