Liberian adventure

I have often praised our local health services here. Our GP is currently on sabbatical in Liberia, helping out and being challenged by a whole new culture. Her blog gives a flavour of the work and the needs of the place. Dr Adrienne tells early on, of a baby dying shortly after birth because of a lack of basic drugs and oxygen.

More than anything it makes me aware of the blessings we have in Scotland. As I have said before, there may be a lot of things that need to be improved, but basically we have the workings of a good and just society. And it is always good to hear of people trying to make things better elsewhere in the world.

That was the week

I did open all the mail.
I did clear my desk.
I did a little light dusting.
I nursed my sore throat.
I lost half a pound.
And read three library books.

And was glad to avoid going out in the rain!

Look on the bright side

The advantage of having a sore throat is the night-time hot toddy:

Take one measure of good whisky, heat for 10seconds in microwave.
Add two measures of boiling water, one spoonful of liquid honey and a squeeze of lemon.
Stir.
Enjoy and sleep well.

First snow

Yes – the first snow of the winter – on a nearby mountain, Ben Luidh. Check out the photo on Him Behind the Wheel.

This week

This week I want:

  • to tidy my desk
  • open all the mail that is in a heap
  • do some housework
  • hunt out the creative writing course
  • enjoy the autumn leaves
  • stick to my diet

As I have said before – retirement is what you make it. And I haven’t even mentioned taking more exercise, finishing the dog’s jumper (alright I know I am lazy about the shaping for the buttons), and chasing up the electrician.

Giving

No man is so poor as to have nothing worth giving: as well might the mountain streamlets say they have nothing to give the sea because they are not rivers. Give what you have: to some one it may be better than you dare to think.

Clocks

The clocks go back an hour in the early hours of Sunday. The autumn will soon give way to winter. Even now the leaves are dropping silently from the trees like raindrops.

Never mind, it is only seven weeks to the shortest day.

Collecting Fox

Today Fox will be released from the trauma of the cattery. Hope he is in a good mood when he gets home. He would probably have enjoyed the hens, the ducks, the turkey, the other cats, the horses and even the dogs…… He will just have to make up to Misty. By the way, she has a new sheepskin jacket. More photocalls are due I think.

Here is the culprit

This is Bug – the one who shredded the hearing aid.
Just as well she is cute!

Safely back

Yes – safely back after a long day to discover that workers have been in and around the homestead. Some progress has been made on the extension and the bathroom now has light, but no screening from the loft – thus, all the heat is going upwards into the roof space.

I am hoping the joiners return soon.
For now, it is off to bed leaving emails and messages until the morrow.
