It’s the season

The tick season is upon us. How come Fox can be de-ticked one minute, go out the cat-flap and come back in half an hour later needing done again? We have a lot of deer round here, so I am blaming them. But it does seem a bit extreme to have to use Frontline (anti-tick medication) every three weeks or so. I am not going to provide any links to the horrible beasties, if any reader feels so inclined, then go ahead and google it.

A song in my head

Well … the wee family have gone home and all is quiet. The washing machine has been busy and so have the dog and I – she hoovering up the crumbs and me polishing off the sticky marks. It all helps to get over the sudden loss! The only daft thing I did was to buy my two-year old grand-daughter a Fifi singing toy: so since they have gone my brain has relentlessly droned out – Fifi and the flowertots, Fifi the forget-me-not. Of course I cannot forget the grandchildren – they are part of me and I regularly thank God for them all.

Sleeping in the driveway

Son #1 is here with his brood, so the grandparents elected to sleep in the driveway in the campervan, thus leaving the parents to be in the house with offspring. Good move that; we reckoned it was more peaceful outside. Lovely to have them here to stay for a couple of days though. Reminds me of the days when I was at home looking after four noisy sons. And of course the inevitable question is How on earth did I manage? Seems to me that this is partly why I enjoy my peaceful life now.

Come to think of it, life is not really all that quiet. Retirement was meant to give time to do all sorts of things, and somehow the days just disappear. This is another one gone.

Love

O ye who taste that love is sweet,
Set waymarks for all doubtful feet
That stumble on in search of it.

Sing notes of love: that some who hear
Far off, inert, may lend an ear,
Rise up and wonder and draw near.

Lead lives of love; that others who
Behold your life may kindle too
With love, and cast their lot with you.

Home again

Safely back from the trip up north, only to discover sixty five emails and six inches of ordinary mail. Oh well – the skylarks and lapwings make it worthwhile (not to mention Son #2 and family!)

The Last Mimzy

Watched The Last Mimzy earlier in the week. It was billed as the ET of the computer age. Beautiful film with just enough suspense for me. In other words it was a genuine feel-good sci-fi film. All about saving the universe. Mind you I always was a sucker for ET; the first time I saw it was in the converted function room of a Stornoway hotel – must have been around 1982!

Visit

Misty has gone to visit three northern dogs. Her tail in the down position shows she is just a little nervous.

Agility Training

If I was fitter I would love to try to train Misty to do agility training. An email advert landed in my In-tray this week, for agility equipment. A simple course with hoop-jumps, tunnels, see-saw and slalom poles would cost hundreds.

Think I shall stick to gentle walks.

Lost hour

I have been reading a book about Time and Ageing – actually it is a collection of academic essays. It helped to set me thinking about the hour we “lost” last night. OK we get it back again in the autumn, but it is still strange to think of the way that we manipulate time. I am also reading a Kathy Reichs thriller which is taking me right back to the first century. The plot interacts between violent deaths then and now – all very believable, and the interesting thing is that the older death is as real as the current one.

Strange thoughts indeed for a Sunday. But not so odd if you believe in the concept of eternity.
Happy First Day of Summertime.
