Paul Newman

I was saddened to hear of the death of Paul Newman yesterday. He was so much a part of my growing up and adult life. Paul Newman lived a credible life both in and out of the public eye and he was lucky to be surrounded by close family and friends when he died. It is important to remember that death comes to us all – that fact should affect the way that we live today.

Peaceful Sunday everyone.

Narrow dog again

Am enjoying Terry Darlington’s second book – Narrowdog to Indian River. Makes me look forward to bedtime even more, that is when it is saved for. The author and his wife, Monica have a very good website which gives a flavour of their travels. It almost makes me want to go on an adventure.

Clever Marketing

Sales techniques have fairly improved over these last years of computers and online shopping. Or, according to your view they could have been said to be detrimental to consumers. Anyway, this week I have to hand it to one large retailer. My order of basics, joggers, t-shirts etc had arrived. Along with it was a leaflet offering 20% off any order within the next 14 days.

Well you can never have too many pairs of joggers when you are retired.

The Chinese

It is surprising the books that I come across in recommendation from authors/journallers and so forth. May Sarton referred to a book about Edgar Snow, written by his wife after he had died. I had gained the impression that this was about A Death with Dignity as the title suggests. However, I should have paid attention to the sub-title which is “When the Chinese Came”. It is indeed a book surrounding the illness and terminal decline of Edgar Snow in the early 1970s. But it is as much about the way that his Chinese friends helped in his final months. Snow was a famous writer and supporter of the People’s Republic of China. I learnt enough to make we want to read more about China – particularly in the light of events of the last forty years.

There is never any need to be bored. And incidentally, I sourced the book through amazon.

A strange sound

This has been the most perfect couple of autumn days – an Indian summer no less. Walking in the meadow beside the river is a delight, but there is a strange sound……. A gentle, pop-pop-pop-pop….. it took a little while for me to realise it is the sound of the broom pods gently opening and dispelling their seeds. A wonderful reminder of birth, life, death and new growth to come.

Library Van day again

Library van day again today. That reminds me – I have finished four good books this month by new (to me) authors. Must update my reading page soon. There is nothing better than a good book, whether it be story, autobiography, biography, journal or travelogue. But somehow I cannot get to grips with Sci-Fi or Fantasy. They seem to me a bit like War and Peace – all strange sounding, unpronounceable names.

Ducklings

These were being protected and sat upon by a broody and fierce duck when we were at The Good Life farm. Look at them now.

The day itself

The wedding was lovely. Happy couple, happy people and the sun nearly shone. But I am no longer up to a 9hr day. So a Sunday of blessed rest for me.

Happy Sunday

Wedding Date

Am off to my old parish today to do a wedding at Kilbrandon Church. It will be the first time I have been back in one of my previous churches. Weddings are very special occasions and I am hoping that the sun will make a showing for the happy couple. As it is an expedition we are taking the campervan to be base-camp. Sounds a bit like a TV reality show!
