Doggy diets

Misty had her annual check up at the Vet’s this week, along with her injections and kennel-cough drops. She was very good with nary a squeak – just the odd rolling of the whites of her eyes. However, the vet did remark that the little dog is rather “solid,” so it was onto the scales before we had time to say no.  Misty weighed in at 8.7kgs which means she needs to lose around one kilo. Quite a lot for a little dog.

Now the good things about a dog going on a diet is that she doesn’t actually have to dread it the way we humans do. She can be easily distracted from food with a toy or a walk. There has got to be a lesson there for us adults. Anyway, the method is to consist of cutting down on gravy bones, using fruit and vegs for extra treats and keeping an eye on things. With any luck, that will be enough. We’ll see what happens with her weekly weigh-in.  (She will probably do better than me.)

Has anyone any advice for weight reduction in pets?

No advice from me, as 2 of my 5 are “solid,” also! In summer, they seems to trim down naturally, as exercise increases. Good luck with your Misty.

Best of luck to you as you work with Misty. If she is determined about snacks and locks those eyes on you, I think it would be hard to deny that cute little face. I hope the distraction works. Maybe I could get my Hubby to try that strategy with me!

The easiest thing is to never let them get heavy to begin of course. My dogs had their annual exams this month and are A-OK for their upcoming teeth cleaning. They only get treats such as Greenies and eat one tub of Little Caesar dog food per day, plus a few crunchies tossed into their dishes at noon. They get some table scraps, but nothing with sugar in it (from me). Helps that I am on a diet too, I suppose. Dianne

Millie is on a diet. I can’t face the pitiful look she gives me when I make no attempt to give her her treats at treat time (she gets ‘coming-in’ treats, for heaven’s sake!) so I have reduced her kibbles by 25 grams per day. It hardly shows in the scales but her waistline is gradually reappearing.

I am afraid Bessie is a bit of a rotund little dog as well. It is harder at this time of year when long walks are not so appealing and we eat things like shepherds pie- and she does love a spoonful in her bowl!
