Yesterday reminded me so much of holidays in Luskentyre during the long summer days on the Island of Harris. Those were the days of terry towelling nappies and small children. Washing clothes out in a bucket of cold water under the running tap. The “caravan site” had three static caravans and two small toilets plus the tap in the middle of the field. We looked out on the sand dunes and the Atlantic and the days always seemed long and satisfying. The children and their friends ran down the hillside pulling their younger siblings in cardboard boxes; so much for health and safety. Can’t say the days were always sunny, but it is on sunny days that such memories come to the fore.

Misty, Him Behind the Wheel and myself had our own encampment of loungers, sun parasoles, and accoutrements of coffee table and assorted drinks out in the front garden. Sheer bliss. (I refuse to think about the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday!) Am resolved to enjoy the summer while it lasts.

Happy Pentecost!

The year has turned, it is now dark at bedtime. It may make it easier to get to sleep but it does emphasise the fact that the summer is rolling by. Some summer today – it has rained steadily all day and the clouds have been like lowered eyebrows on the hills. So what do the retired do? Declare it another holiday. The chores can wait till tomorrow.

The swifts are back in force. They nest in and around the old school building nearby. For me they are the evocative voice of summer. Their cries and wheeling flight remembered through the years in many different places. They have returned from Africa and will only be here for a few short weeks. Weeks of long daylight and long gloaming……. it is truly summer
