Old Geezer poses the question about what would make someone be tempted to go back into the house for, if the house was burning down. I’m not sure that I would be brave enough (stupid enough?) to go back into a burning building, unless it was to save a person or the dog. However, I can think of things that would be useful: mobile phone, (it includes contacts lists,) keys to campervan (would give temporary shelter) ……. as for photos and personal items, there are too many to choose amongst.

I once visited someone in a house which had been rebuilt following a catastrophic fire. All that had been left was a lump of molten silver – a tea service originally. The person lamented the loss of photos of previous generations more than anything else, and I guess that would be similar for most people.

For now, I’ll just check the smoke alarm battery.
Have you anything special that would tempt you to such folly?

One of the things that makes me laugh about Misty is the way she likes to have routines. By the way, a lot of the time I am laughing with her – you can tell by the bounce in her step and the extra twinkle in her eyes. Each morning she goes out, then comes back to bed for a snuggle and an extra snooze, then after I am showered and dressed it is time for her eye ointment. She has no natural tears in her right eye, so each morning she comes to remind me, jumps up on her special chair and tilts her head to the left to make the procedure easier. Then of course it is half a dentastix, which she proceeds to “kill” by pouncing at it and ultimately rolling on top to make sure.

Humans adopt routines too; I often think about how it works when doing the morning ablutions or facing up to the need to get down to some (less frequent than ever,) housework. I am sure of one thing though; as I get older it is especially important to have set places to put keys, mobile phone and wallet etc. It means there is less of a scurry when it is time to go out. I used to be always flying out the door with hardly enough time to catch a ferry, nowadays it is more likely to be an appointment for medical needs.

Whatever the habits and routines we build up, it’s true to say that time seems to go faster and faster as we go through life. No sooner are we dressed than it seems time to get undressed, and even in retirement there are things I never seem to get done. When do we start to become creatures of habit? When do habits become the established custom? And worst thought of all – when do they become an addiction?

The Library Van came early and amongst the goodies was a book I had requested (second part of Michael J Fox’s autobiography) – so guess what I have been happily engaged in. It is as an antidote after a fearful walk adjacent to a large, menacing bull. OK so it was behind a deer fence but all it needed to do was harumphhh at the fence and the fence would have been mince.

Think walks will be in the forest for a while.

For the life of me I cannot turn this into a funny tale. Misty’s regular walk is down to the river and through the Glebe field. On the way, we have to pass a house at the end of our track. The occupants have a retired greyhound; he makes a lot of noise but has kept to himself, I have to confess that I keep a wary eye nonetheless. From time to time there are visiting dogs, one of which has rather aggressively gone towards Misty in the past. Today, it jumped over the fence, ran at Misty and jumped on top of her – not for fun but with much barking and aggression. She was too stunned and taken by surprise to react. Fortunately, Him Behind the Wheel was there too, and between us we managed to chase off the other dog and I lifted Misty free.

There was no harm done apart to my nerves. I did find the owner and speak to him, and hopefully it won’t happen again. But it is a bit salutory to have to take a dog-guard on the walk every day.

Misty, the cairn terrier, went to the vet recently for her vaccinations and check up. Did I mention that the vet said she was “rather sturdy” – (For the sake of clarity it is Misty that is sturdy, not the vet) – anyway, at the weigh in it transpired that the little dog was 8.1kg – noticeably more than her ideal breed weight of 7.5kg. Well, Misty has taken it to heart and has already lost 0.2kg.

The cat didn’t want to be left out so he got weighed too – he is only 5.1kg. His weight and age had to be entered onto the online petmeds people. They want to be sure they are dispensing the correct pills and potions. Amazing really.
