Woke up this morning to a hard frost and bright sunshine. By the afternoon the temperature had risen to all of 4 degrees centigrade and the rain was near freezing. Never mind, ‘flu jab done and winter woolies are looked out, summer clothes need packed away. There really is no arguing with the weather. But how about this for last night’s glory?

I think it is called an autumn break. A few walks in the sunshine would be a good idea. See you soon.

Went for a walk with the dog this afternoon and caught the tail end of a shower. The temperature is still pretty high for this time of year (17.5C) The acorns have started swelling on the oak trees and in some places the heather is turning brown. I guess that means that summer has come to an end. As you can see from the photo it is a particularly brooding sort of day.

We are spoilt for beautiful places around us – lots of good walks and picnic spots. I used to like climbing hills and even the odd mountain, but that is much more of a challenge nowadays. It is amazing how quickly the days go by. Today has been the odd bit of computing, a bit of housework, a potter and tidy up of magazines and papers, lunch (soup) and a snooze, then a walk, followed by coffee from a flask and some time idly gazing at the river (in good company of course)…….. and will now include more computing, a bit of a read and maybe some TV after a good meal. I have worked out that wall to wall NCIS recordings in the evenings make for a restless sleep; the answer is very simple – finish with an episode of the Waltons on DVD.

I suppose you could say it is a nothing kind of day. Amazing how enjoyable the weekends are in retirement.

Meditation at autumn

Once upon an autumntide
long enough to grow…… into a yearly memory
a gift, a scene, a story….
Pictures you can view through the windows of your mind..

The trees all dressed in colours
and leaves upon the earth…..the colours bright,
and sharp and clear, sweet and muddy smells.
Cool lemon, hot red, sharp green and flaming orange,
glistening on the ground and rustling on the branch.

Houses wreathed in trails of mist,
gardens censed with peat or wood,
and from the clear, cool air above
a dog bark magnified and caught
upon the currents of nearly winter.

And every time you smell the smoke
or catch the cold upon your breath
whenever leaves dance before your eyes,
or when you hear a sound in silence…..
you know.

It is autumn.
A gift of time to remember
- to rest
- to grow
- to become your promised whole.

Amen

Walking in the meadow beside the river is a delight, but there is a strange sound……. A gentle, pop-pop-pop-pop….. it took a little while for me to realise it is the sound of the broom pods gently opening and dispelling their seeds. A wonderful reminder of birth, life, death and new growth to come.

This whole week is about being back to nature and to an appreciation of the rhythm of the seasons and the daily needs of animals. In this northern clime we are treated to daily flights of hundreds of geese going back and forth from feeding grounds to roosting areas.

A real sound of autumn. And an awareness of the breadth and beauty of creation.
