My husband and I returned early this week from taking my mother-in-law to visit a sister. News took a back burner while we dealt with her medical emergency for a few days on the way home. First news to greet us -- oil has arrived on our Mississippi shores.

Thank you for the link to that excellent mapping of the oil spill. I am going to go back and see if I can get it on my Facebook page. The horror of this disaster brings tears daily; in fact, for the first time in my adult life I am unable to view the news each and every evening. Must parse out the pain or slump into a depression.

When I was in grammar school we used to sing a song about Litterbugs. In searching I found another song from the same era but not the one we sang in school. Still, this is a good Litterbug Song. Singing the song built an early awareness in me, and I never litter - and do pick up after others, especially when we go to the Oregon beaches. I think if we instill the very young with caring and awareness it will last a lifetime.

Useful site, Tim, thanks for the opportunity to whinge without hanging on the end of a telephone! Linda, I know what you mean about looking at how your own area would look after such an oil mess.

I don't think I've even begun to absorb the destruction of the oil spill. I don't think I could face imagining what our beautiful Pacific Northwest would look like after such destruction.

Fortunately the Pacific Northwest if very focused on saving the earth. Perhaps because of its beauty it recognizes the need to be good stewards of it.

Ouch on both counts.

As for simple litter, there's FixMyStreet which seems like an excuse for people to whinge at their local councils when they could be tidying things up themselves.
