Being certain

One thing is certain:
to be fully alive involves the renunciation
of one’s past and of one’s future.

Anthony de Mello

I am not too sure what he means or if it is true, but it is worth thinking about.

I think there is merit in that line insofar as to be fully alive in surely to be “in the now”, fully present in the moment at hand. However, the word “renunciate” seems strong – I am not sure one can renunciate either one’s past or one’s future. I do think it is possible to not LIVE in the past ( feeling so bound up by past events that we cannot stride forward ) or in the future (feeling so anxious about what ‘might’ happen that we let nothing new happen.)

That’s my 2 pennies worth in any case…

Thanks Mata, you are right that we can never “do away with” our past. It obviously helps to make us who we are. And I like the bit about not being anxious about the future.
